PostSubject: Doyle Brunson's Super System   Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:33 pm

I have read the No Limit Holdem section in Doyle's Book.

I think Doyle presents a very aggressive approach to the game. I honestly think his adivce is to play too aggressive and to take too many chances.

Take for example him advising readers to push their straight and flush draws to try and represent a big hand. I don't neccessarily agree with this, but it works at times. I would agree it works at the higher stakes cash tables and major tournaments more often than it would in an online dollar tournament or a freeroll. This is because more people are more likely to call you if they are not afraid of you or are not afraid of going broke.

Doyle can use his pro image to intimidate other players. Not everyone has this leverage, nor do they have the guts or the money to be risking those kind of plays.

I prefer the tight aggressive approach to poker. I don't like risking all my chips on a straight or flush draw, rather waiting for and playing decent hands that I think will win in the long run.

Well, you have a point there. I've read both books. SS was written from strictly a cash table confrontational standpoint. It is how he made his name in poker and one can pick out some good points from it. SS 2 does address, somewhat, The online world of poker. It also has more stratagizing in it. You can pick up more good stuff in that one too.

Good blog ! The key to taking anything away from reading pokerbooks is the ability to analyze and apply strategies correctly . Your analysis is sound and you've developed your own style of play and that is , imo , the right way. Good luck to you , Bro !

I like doyle but his play is way to loose at times. I like the way you put it, pick good hands and stay with them.

It's one thing to try that in a cash game, but quite another in a tournament. Two very different animals!
I think Dan Harrington has two of the best NLHE Tournament books out there...just my opinion of course.
But I do agree with your theory that you have to adapt whatever you read to YOUR situation and YOUR style of play. You can NEVER have too much information on this crazy game we all love to hate!

This is one of the things I have been saying for over a year now. People read his book and think, I have a draw with 8 or more outs. I have to bluff here all in. Which is why there are so many suck outs in online poker. The sad thing is so many people get paid off by doing this so they continue to do it.
